Q. 2. Write a note on the historiographical traditions in early India.

Ans.                          COURTLY TRADITIONS: PRASASTIS

Prasastis are also a type of historical records written as independent inscriptions during 4th century CE. They are mainly eulogistic in nature, commemorating the generosity of the royal donors, and written in ornate Sanskrit using similies and metaphors. It is evident that these inscriptions were circulated among elite audience, mainly rulers and court staff.
Some of the earliest examples of prasastis are in Prakrit, the best known examples are in Sanskrit. Such inscriptions become particularly common from 4th century CE. These were often independent inscriptions, but could also be part of notive inscriptions, commemorating the generosity of the royal donor.
