Q. 1. Discuss the difference between the geographical features of the West Coastal Low land and the East Coastal Low land.

Ans. To the east and the west of the peninsular plateau lie two narrow coastal plains which are called the eastern coastal and western coastal plains. They are formed due to erosion and deposition of the sea waves and also due to the sedimentation caused by the river

The total length of the coastal plain is about 6100 km. The western coastal plain is comparatively narrow. Its average breadth in Gujarat is 50 km. while 250 km merges into the internal parts of the Narmada. 100 km. area of the Tapti plain also remains in the internal parts. Contrary to it, the coastal plains of Goa and Karnataka are much narrow. The average breadth is merely 10-15 km. A delta-like shape is formed at the bank. The water-flow causes sedimentation at the mouth of the river. Delta, Lagoon, spits etc. are also found at the bank. There are two reasons of the formation of these shapes or land forms–first the rapid flow of most of the rivers into the Sea which forms delta. Second the sedimentation taking place because of the flow of water with the help of sea waves. This process leads to the formation of sand dunes, off-shore bars and other surface land forms.
