Section B
Q. 7. Write a note on the basic constituents
of nationalist view of Indian history.
Ans. In response to the colonial
denigration of India and its people, many Indians and even some Europeans took up
an examination of colonial stereotypes as a challenge. They tried to prove the
falsity of colonial narratives. They analysed the existing historical sources
and hunted for fresh sources to prove these colonialists wrong. Most Indian
historians started writing about ancient and medieval period as most of them
were working under government and there was a fear that any critique of
colonialism would affect their career. Secondly, they accepted the contemporary
view that scientific history must not deal with the contemporary period. Nationalist
historians displayed in their writings the Indian’s prowess in administration
and statecraft, empire building, diplomacy, taxation structure, military
organization, warfare and agrarian, industrial and commercial development.
